The Dangers of Fatigued Driving

Fatigue is a major cause of serious auto accidents. Driving while fatigued causes over 100,000 auto accidents each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In these accidents, 1,550 people are killed and 40,000 injuries occur.

To avoid driving while you are tired, you should:

  • Pursue good sleep habits to get a full, restful night of sleep.
  • Never drive under the influence of alcohol.
  • Use caution when taking medication and carefully assess side effects.
  • Avoid taking long road trips alone.
  • On long drives, take regular breaks to stretch, or nap if possible and safe.

Fatigue can be as distracting and disorienting as driving drunk, and driving drowsy may cause delayed reactions to events on the road. People who work late-night shifts are particularly vulnerable to fatigue and nighttime driving accidents that could harm not only themselves, but other drivers as well.

To prevent auto accidents and serious injuries, make a commitment to never drive tired. If you suffered from lack of sleep the night before or are fatigued for any other reason, take alternate transportation, such as the bus, a cab or a ride from a friend.
